Fall Break - Boston

I missed my flight. It doesn't seem like it was possible--we weren't in a rush, I didn't even really realize what time my flight was (probably the source of the problem). But I ended up getting on one an hour and a half later, which worked just fine.

I did a lot of walking, which is really what I wanted to do, while I was in Boston. The whole city was really quite interesting and different, but it made me appreciate Charleston quite a bit with the many colors and different, southern styles. Boston seemed dark and industrial to me; everything was brick, and, to the disappointment of Don (my uncle), the cobbled streets didn't have the effect that they would have had on someone not from Charleston.

But I saw lots of graves, including Mother Goose, Sam Adams, victims of the Boston Massacre, Paul Revere, etc. I also walked around the campuses of Harvard, MIT, and BU, all of which were unique (BU was my favorite, followed by Harvard, with MIT being last). I sat a while and read and went to a few interesting restaurants, like a completely vegan Thai place that didn't go over well with Katie (my cousin), to my chagrin. I also saw a friend from high school and ate a raw meal of beet-chips and cashew-garlic dip.

One of the coolest parts was the hostel I stayed in the last night. I met a man from Brazil who was vacationing for almost a month along the east coast of the United States. In my room, there was a girl from Australia who had been to 30 countries and saved up enough miles to only spend $130 on her flight back to Australia. There were also two French girls who giggled at my pronunciation of their names.

The "T" (Boston's metro) was also an interesting experience--not as efficient as one would expect. It was quite squeaky and there was one point where I had to get off at two consecutive stops because the train was going out of commission for the day or something, even though I had to stay on the same line.

As with each time I travel, I feel as though I know a lot more about what I want in life and what kind of environment I want to be in. I found Boston not as vegan-friendly as expected (it was better than, say, Fort Mill, but not much better than Charleston) and also too busy and plain for my tastes. I've realized more and more how larger cities are not for me.
