This morning we attended mass at St. Peter's church in Skokie, Ill. Had breakfast, packed up and headed to the west side of Chicago to the youth home where our oldest, Megan, lives and works. Fortunately, Megan was awake when we got there at 11:30. Unfortunately, Megan was awake because she couldn't get to sleep from carousing with friends the night before. College friends came into town to celebrate a 21st birthday. Sarah, our middle daughter was the emcee of this event for awhile but left the carousing several hours early because she had to be at work at 6:30 am. We had an opportunity to say hello to several of the 13 other people that Megan lives with. That many people living together is going to require a good deal of communication and effort to be considerate of others. From what we could see, the mix is pretty good. It is apparent that Megan is learning quite a bit about how to effectively provide services to people who had to exist in the margins of society. It is obvious that she is coming to terms with the fact that the world is constructed in more ways than the way she has experienced it and that these other constructs are valid and quite real for the people living within them.
Megan joined Linda and I as we went to Sarah's establishment for brunch. Again, the fare was quite good. We caught up on conversation. Realizing that it was after 3pm, we said goodbye to Sarah, returned to the west side of Chicago, dropped Megan off and said goodbye. From there, it was a 4 hour, uneventful trip home. Clark, our GPS unit, directed us to our favorite spot instead of the house. Not being ones to fight fate, we went into Hacienda Las Glorias and had a margarita before going home.
