Leaving the Adriatic (Rovinj - Croatia and Venice)

The sun is on its way down and the people are moving.

Alas the June school holidays have started and there are whippers everywhere. It's a totally different feel. Still, it is great to see the families travelling. There are heaps of Germans here. They always seem to stay ahead of the best spots.

Ash is walking, taking sunset photos, which will be great. The colours of the buildings here, right up to the sea, are pretty amazing.

Today we hired bikes and rode for 20 or so kms along the coast. It was a bit choppy but we managed to find a few small sheltered coves and had  our last dips in the Adriatic. The bikes were a vast improvement on the ones we have ridden from hotels so far. The seats stayed up, the leg length was good, the gears worked and we didn't have racing saddles that really made for an uncomfortable ride.

Last night we blew some mullah having cocktails at sunset at Valentinos.. A very up market  terrace bar on the side of the rocks. Dressed in white, hot pink and black, the ambiance was lovely. I took a couple of waiter shots for you  and the girls Tess.

Tomorrow we are heading for Venice. Should be a good trip. A couple of hours on the ferry, then up the Grand Canal. I think a few free hours will be all we can cope with. Apparently it is pretty big and very expensive. A taste will suit this trip.

I love the way the upstairs rooms have washing lines out the windows. They are very effective unless a lapse in concentration causes you to drop one of your favourite socks. I thought Ash was joking when, after I convinced him to negotiate the downstairs expedition, he called up that one was gone. At midnight this isn't good. Peering down, it was wedged on the electric wires- 4metres down and 4 metres up.  Attempts to free it with missiles were useless. Ash gave it away until the morning, cursing me but finally, by tying my bra to my scarf and my shoe bag occy strap on the other end, I managed to fish it off by hanging out the window and flicking it over. Magnanimously Ash trudged downward to retrieve it and the errant missiles.

Our new game is increasing in volume. It's called spot the people you know. Quite amusing to see if we both identify the same characteristics in people. Be relieved, we don't see many close friends or relatives.

THURSDAY.11TH?

We are on the bus to Lubjiana, having just left Rovinj. I wanted to finish this blog before we got to Lub. Apparently we will be there for their summer festival.

Yesterday was great. Venice was lovely and I couldn't believe our luck, it wasn't too busy. No queue for the Doge's palace and only 5 mins for The Basillica. The ferry was effective to get there and they gave us a running description as we cruised up the Grand Canal. Ash and I had 4 hrs to explore. Nowhere near enough to visit the Biennale which started Friday, but good enough for us to see the major sites. Venice is just so overwhelming. Not size wise but everywhere you look there is something else of Renaissance quality.  Coupled with the grand architecture and frescoes and gold it is easy to suffer from sensory overload. We managed, however, and Ash took some great shots.

We found the Rialto bridge, took a shot of it then headed on to have lunch. We mused the impressiveness of the bridge and why it was so famous, only to discover later in the day that the real bridge was elsewhere. Follow the crowds was the tour guides advice. We found the crowds there and the view was impressive.

The day was topped off by a water taxi ride through the canals and back to our ferry. It was interesting to see the work they are doing building up dykes to protect Venice from the rising tides and increasing storms.

We dined on our Truffle and pasta dish, the favourite of Rovinj and rued the fact that this was our last coastal town. Well not rued really. It is always exciting to move on to the unknown.

Love to all Janet.
