Today we decided to explore the area of Greenwich, which is an area down the Thames a bit that has a lot of maritime history associated with it.
We caught the tube as far as the Docklands precinct, walked through Docklands and then walked through a pedestrian tunnel that was dug under the river Thames 100 years ago. I couldn't help but notice there were more than a few drips of water coming from the ceiling.
Pommies pronounce everything weird. Greenwich is one example of this, pronounced grennich, Leicester Square is pronounced lester square, Gloucester is pronounced gloster, I could go on.
Greenwich has a good little town feeling to it. There was markets and cool old pubs there. There was also a huge park with a hill in the middle of it. On top of the hill is a building called the Royal Observatory.
We checked it out and it turns out it is the home of Time. Turns out that Time did not in fact exist until the British pronounced it to be so.
We also travelled up the river a bit and checked out the Thames Barrier, a set of sci-fi looking gates designed to block the tidal surges from the ocean that have historically caused a bit of mischief in ye olde London.
I must say, however, that the highlight of today (and indeed, of my life) was riding in the upper deck of a red double-decker bus.
