Double decker buses rule

Today we decided to explore the area of Greenwich, which is an area down the Thames a bit that has a lot of maritime history associated with it.

We caught the tube as far as the Docklands precinct, walked through Docklands and then walked through a pedestrian tunnel that was dug under the river Thames 100 years ago. I couldn't help but notice there were more than a few drips of water coming from the ceiling.

Pommies pronounce everything weird. Greenwich is one example of this, pronounced grennich, Leicester Square is pronounced lester square, Gloucester is pronounced gloster, I could go on.

Greenwich has a good little town feeling to it. There was markets and cool old pubs there. There was also a huge park with a hill in the middle of it. On top of the hill is a building called the Royal Observatory.

We checked it out and it turns out it is the home of Time. Turns out that Time did not in fact exist until the British pronounced it to be so.

We also travelled up the river a bit and checked out the Thames Barrier, a set of sci-fi looking gates designed to block the tidal surges from the ocean that have historically caused a bit of mischief in ye olde London.

I must say, however, that the highlight of today (and indeed, of my life) was riding in the upper deck of a red double-decker bus.

That was one part of London I didn't get to visit, so I enjoyed reading what you have written.

By the way, if you think the pommies pronounce things strangely, try going to Scotland..."Milngavie", where some rellies of mine live , is pronounced "Mul-guy"and "Kirkcaldy" is pronounced "Kircuddy" and there are many more!

The buses are great and you get to see a lot more than if you take the tube, but they are quite a bit slower.

Hi John and Sharon,
Loved your Greenwich experience. We went down there to see partly the place where time began and also to see the Cutty Sark. Arriving as the time mackine was closing down we went to find the ship was all in wraps. Next week it was on fire. I guess ther would not have been much of it to see when you were there. I wish that I had seen the barrage. I have read all about it and seen a doco and it appears awesome. What a great experience it would have been for you.

Keep up the great blavelling...I love it...Carry

You mean to tell me that the highlight wasn't the slide?!
We went on double-decker buses too, but in hong kong. They were a little more on the scary side and a little less on the highlight side given that the overhanging trees apparently weren't designed for double-decker-awesomeness- was glad not to be sitting in the front! No such problems in the UK?
