Icecream and bicycles

Another epic 20-hour bus journey and we find ourselves in Copenhagen. This time we were quite surprised to wake up during our bus journey (about 2am) to find that the bus was inside a boat! I guess the quickest way there is across water.

Copenhagen is not the greatest place to go if you are on a budget! Everything is almost twice as much as many of the other places we have been so far. Luckily enough though the cheapest place we could find also happened to be very nice, a hotel with tiny rooms but all in the well designed IKEA-like Scandinavian style.

The city is very interesting, a real melting-pot which suprised me as I expected Denmark to be quite monocultural. We saw the full spectrum from ultra-expensive shops and accommodation to heritage industrial areas to streets full of prostitutes and shady characters.

Everybody rides bikes around, even men in suits and women in high heels. No-one wears a helmet, there are dedicated sections for bikes on nearly every street. There is very little traffic for a city of this size.

There is lots of old architecture mixed with new crazy edgy buildings - I am sure many designers find this city very inspiring.

We took a boat cruise around the canals, which was a really good way to see a lot of sights.

One of this highlights was going up into the dome of the Marble Church. Unfortunately, I couldn't really get a good picture going up inside the dome itself, which was the most interesting part. The whole thing is actually made of wood inside, with the coppery dome sort of just laid onto an elaborate set of wooden beams.

Our accommodation was very central and comfortable, so it was a welcome rest after the ordeal of THE TENT in Munich. :) Now we make our way into the Netherlands and Amsterdam.
