Exploring Berlin with 'Uncle Georg'

Hi everyone, we have been in Germany since the 19th Dec and absolutely love it. We think it is ‘wundebar’! We flew into Berlin from London with Ryan air which I have to say is not the greatest experience in the world! We were met by our very good friend Nadja’s uncle Georg at the airport so lucky for us we had someone to help us find our way into the city. We stayed at uncle Georg’s in Berlin for two days and nights and he is just the most lovely man and looked after us so well! The next day uncle Georg (or Onkel as it is pronounced in Deutschland) took us to:

  • Gedachtniskirche (a church that had been bombed in WW2 and hasn't been rebuilt yet)
  • Europa Centre (with a really cool weird clock contraption)
  • Reichstag (Parliament with an awesome architectural thingy on top)
  • Berlin Wall
  • Brandenburger Tor (a gate that was put up in victory of some war or something)
  • Unter den Linden (a very nice/rich shopping street)
  • Dom (Cathedral)
  • Museum (Antiks/Egyptian)
  • Fernsehtum (A TV tower with an observation platform)
  • Naturkuhdemuseum (Natural Museum)

Uncle Georg then took us to an Indian restaurant for dinner. It was really funny, the bartender in this Indian restaurant was a lady who was from Melbourne, born to Italian parents, previously worked in the casino at the Gold Coast (where Johnnie is from) and had a Russian boyfriend. So she sounded Australian but spoke Italian, English, German and a little bit of Russian and maybe even Indian! Small world.

We loved our time in Berlin... it wasn't too cold at that stage although cold enough (about a high of 3) and Uncle Georg was fantastic and looked after us so well!  We loved being immersed in the German culture, for instance, we ate Bratwurst in the traditional Christmas markets and had gorgeous cheese on yummy bread for breakfast.  In fact, I particularly loved it because I could have as much camembert as I wanted to! It's pretty cheap here. Yummy or should I say 'lecker' (german for yummy)!

Check out the photo's they're really cool and keep tuned for a Dresden, Cottbus and then Prague entry.
