Ulm Germany

Ulm is a city between Munich and Stuttgart. Its about an hour from Stuttgart and is also home to Legoland.  Ulm boasts the tallest church spire in all of Europe. Its worth the drive down A8.

Inside every cathedral is interesting and Ulm's is no exception.  Its near the city center or Zentrum. The market is held every Saturday until 1300.  Vendors sell everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to flowers and other goods.  I had a wonderful conversation with a local lady while waiting for my family to climb to the top of the spire.  The conversation was in both my limited German and her excellent English.

We visited in late August/early September which coincided with their wine festival.  Germans are known for the ability to have fun and there is always a festival somewhere.  Wine festivals are always fun.  Sample the local wines and foods, enjoy the local conversation, and just enjoy.  The locals are friendly and you'll find someone who speaks English.

Just a note:  the cathedrals in Europe have a dress code.  While Germany is more relaxed than Italy you may find yourself surprised if you don't dress properly.  You must have sleeves, t-shirts are fine, and no showing the knees so no shorts. Capri's and dresses are fine as long as they are long enough. The Germans love to wear their capris and this includes men, women and children.  We wear pants that zip off at the capri length and short length so we can adjust as the weather changes.  If you're going to Rome note you can't have backpacks inside St Peters Basilica.  Flash photography in most cathedrals is prohibited.
