When I graduated high school, I made the promise to myself I would never spend an entire summer in the United States. Well, so far, I have made good on that. After summers in France, Korea, and Germany (with stops in 9 other countries), my passion for travel has gone far beyond what anyone - especially my parents - ever would have expected. I can't seem to spend more than 9 months at home before I get the urge to leave again. I am incredibly blessed! Something about discovering a new culture and going beyond being a tourist just gets me...
That said, I am about to embark on about 6 months of culture shock. I am leaving Monday for a semester in South Africa and then doing Camp Adventure in Bahrain (hopefully) for the summer. In South Africa, I will be spending my time studying and volunteering in the community of Stellenbosch. Since this will prove to be quite the opportunity, I decided to create a blog so you, my reader, get to share in it. And for those of you stuck in winter, think of it as nice, sunshine-y hugs from me in hot Africa to you in freezing Iowa. I hope you enjoy reading about my travels and feel free to share this blog with anyone else it may interest. And if blogs aren't your thing, no worries, I won't be offended if you choose not to follow along.
Oh yeah, so I should probably mention - the reason I am not already in South Africa is because I wanted to participate in ISU Dance Marathon. This Saturday, Jan 24th, I will be dancing 15 hours in honor of children helped by the Children's Miracle Network and treated at the University of Iowa Children's Hospital. If you would like to make a donation to help this great cause, please visit my online giving page for instructions and more info. I'd really appreciate the help...and so would the kids! In response to why I chose Africa to study abroad, I guess, I just couldn't resist seeing a part of the world I never imagined I'd go..."Gonna take some time to do the things we never had"
