Bless the rains down in Africa

When I graduated high school, I made the promise to myself I would never spend an entire summer in the United States. Well, so far, I have made good on that. After summers in France, Korea, and Germany (with stops in 9 other countries), my passion for travel has gone far beyond what anyone - especially my parents - ever would have expected. I can't seem to spend more than 9 months at home before I get the urge to leave again. I am incredibly blessed! Something about discovering a new culture and going beyond being a tourist just gets me...

That said, I am about to embark on about 6 months of culture shock. I am leaving Monday for a semester in South Africa and then doing Camp Adventure in Bahrain (hopefully) for the summer. In South Africa, I will be spending my time studying and volunteering in the community of Stellenbosch. Since this will prove to be quite the opportunity, I decided to create a blog so you, my reader, get to share in it. And for those of you stuck in winter, think of it as nice, sunshine-y hugs from me in hot Africa to you in freezing Iowa. I hope you enjoy reading about my travels and feel free to share this blog with anyone else it may interest. And if blogs aren't your thing, no worries, I won't be offended if you choose not to follow along.

Oh yeah, so I should probably mention - the reason I am not already in South Africa is because I wanted to participate in ISU Dance Marathon. This Saturday, Jan 24th, I will be dancing 15 hours in honor of children helped by the Children's Miracle Network and treated at the University of Iowa Children's Hospital. If you would like to make a donation to help this great cause, please visit my online giving page for instructions and more info. I'd really appreciate the help...and so would the kids! Please visit www.kidsmiracles.org/lizfisher

In response to why I chose Africa to study abroad, I guess, I just couldn't resist seeing a part of the world I never imagined I'd go..."Gonna take some time to do the things we never had"

Wow- that sounds wonderful! I'm embarking on a study-abroad journey to Egypt and expect culture shock as well. What is your major/what will you be studying while in Africa?

So.... you totally didn't tell me that you are going to Bahrain this summer! And see this crazy girl Binita that is following you? She is on of my best friends at Arcadia. :) It's funny that she found you without even knowing that we're friends.... small world.
