The Towong reserve was quite a nice spot but we decided we would move on towards Albury stopping somewhere along the way to further enjoy the scenery. It was also difficult being next to such a nice river but unable to swim in it due to the very fast flowing water and also it was soooo cold as straight off the mountains.
After saying our good byes to Wilma and Dave we headed across the one lane bridge into Victoria and took the scenic route following the Murray River towards Albury (which is back in NSW). There were supposed to be some ideal places along the way but we failed to find them and we also needed cell phone reception so we could say goodbye to Lisa and Daniel who are heading off to Europe and Canada for a few months and there was none as we were still in amongst some significant hill country.
What was of interest was that the road eventually started to run alongside Lake Hume but it would appear the lake level is quite low so there are huge areas where there are dead black trees just standing in the very green areas next to the remaining water. Presumably these are the remains of the trees that get submerged when the lake is full but as the level is now so low they all stand exposed and it was like this all the way to where we turned off to go over Mt Granya to Pigs Point camp a few Km south of Tallangatta.
The Pigs Point camp is really nice and next to the Mitta Mitta River which was quite warm (Ross had a swim) and reasonably clean. The camp was not very crowded so we had our choice of spots and settled next to a huge poplar tree so we could take advantage of its shade as the weather is now warming up considerably – around 30 degrees and quite humid. There was no Cell, Internet or TV reception so to call Lisa we took a 10km drive back to the main highway to say our goodbyes.
We had also reached a milestone of sorts in that we have just clocked our first 10,000km in the Beast during the 4 months we have been in Oz so for the record a few stats are as follows:
Number of places we have stayed - 66
Days on the road – 116
Average accommodation cost per day - $12.12
Average fuel cost per day $23.79
We had a lazy day in camp as there was nowhere we could really walk to so instead engaged our brains playing scrabble and in the morning decided to head to Albury to a caravan park for a couple of nights.
