The last week has spent at the Caravan Park at Woorim which is on the eastern side of Bribie Island. It has been a week of setting up the van, finding out how things work and of rest – something we have been in need of, and also a few small repairs and tidy-up jobs on the Shitter.
The birdlife on this island is interesting as it would appear 99% of it lives in this caravan park and at 05:30am ish they all start to wake up, first with the crows and then a few minutes later the Kookaburras startup laughing their heads off at the fact that everyone is now awake. But after a few days of this I guess one gets used to it as it seems to disturb us less than it used to. Also in the Park are many varieties of parrot, the familiar magpie, some Top Knot pigeons and a few varieties of Parrot along with various other bird types that we have not seen before. Interestingly we went for about a 10km walk to the local shops along a road that borders the natural bush of the island and only saw and heard a few birds. The Island is actually quite a populated place with around 30,000 permanent residents – not exactly what we were expecting, and the beach is like a typical west coast New Zealand white sand beach.
Everyone we have met and talked to in the park are very friendly and willing to offer helpful advice about travelling and setup etc so that has been excellent for us newbies.
Tomorrow we are off toward Gympie so it will be interesting to see how we get on towing on roads that are other than motorway and with a bit of luck we are going to stop somewhere to free camp.
