AIFS's Family Vacation

For fall break, AIFS explored the Garden Route...all 60 some of us Americans. It was seven days filled with lots of driving, animals (including humans), and ocean. The Garden Route is the most recommended trip in South Africa. It is basically a coastal road going from the Western to Eastern Cape, with all the towns and reserves along the way catering to travelers. It is a gorgeous route that did not disappoint!

I don't want to bore people with all the details, so will let my pictures tell the story. Be sure to check them out. But a few highlights:

1 - We slept at three different locations and drove each day around to the surrounding area for activities. We stayed in Buffalo Bay, in a backpackers (think hostel) right on the Indian Ocean secluded from anyone or thing else. The isolating nature couldn't get better. A local SA reggae band played a private concert for us the first night. Then, we headed to Ingwe Forest Adventures amongst the indigenous forest of the Crags outside of Plettenberg Bay. Literally, cabins in the forest - very summer camp-ish, especially with the fire. Our last stop brought us to the Island Vibe Backpackers, a chill place in Jeffrey's Bay. I wish I knew how to surf because it really is the best place to surf in the world!

2 - "We will all be happy and like each other." One of the rules of our trip set by our director. Another one: "There will be no tears on Garden Route, except for tears of joy."

3 - Relaxing on a beach, listening to the ocean waves crash, is officially my favorite activity. Period. I'm glad I grew up in a place with no true beach in sight - I think it's made me appreciate the ocean all the more. (I have a lot of beach pictures because we spent so much time on them, but I spared us all and didn't post many - just know I loved it).

4 - Sandboarding (basically snowboarding on sand dunes) is my new favorite sport. I never got to sled this winter back home, but I finally got the chance here!

5 - We saw a lot of animals and learned about their plight against the advance of humans in their environment. Sad how close so many fabulous creatures are to extinction because we cannot all co-exist.

6 - Jumping off a bridge 216m off the ground is the most terrifying thing I have ever done. But I'm glad I did it - ask me to show you the video sometime.

7 - The scenery reminded me once again:  Life is Beautiful.

Amen.
