Day 3 - Tuesday

Today was spent relaxing and just hanging out together.  Those of us that sleep lightly (me!) were pretty exhausted after a very restless night.  Staying in this house is kind of like camping.  We can only turn on the air conditioning for the room that we are in at the time and only while we are in it, so needless to say, it gets pretty hot and we are constantly having to re-apply the ever needed bug spray that we keep sweating off.  Bugs are everywhere!  We are surrounded by a jungle-type atmosphere which is prime breeding grounds for mosquitos and other pesky flies.  I counted 37 mosquitos bites this morning!  I kind of look diseased : /  But the worst thing is that there are jungle noises at night.  Some critter seemed to be camped out right outside our window last night whooping and hollering at the top of its lungs for hours!  Justin thinks it was the monkey scretching all night but whatever it was, it was loud!  It is really adding to the we-aren't-in-kansas-anymore experience! This vacation was titled "Blame it on Mexico" afterall! Hopefully the creature has moved on so we can get some sleep tonight!

We started the day with an eventful trip to Walmart!  DJ made the "mistake" of going with us three women and was quite frustrated with the crowds of locals and the shopping techniques of the female gender.  Apparently we were unreasonable in getting stuff to make hamburgers for lunch-- although he didn't complain when he got to eat them : ).  After lunch we headed to the beach for some sand volleyball!  After DJ and I dominated the court on a two on three match, some Norwegians decided to challenge us in a game.  The beat us twice before we gave up.  They used a lot of soccer moves that we obviously lacked.  Side note: when were were going through customs, a huge airplane had just landed from Spain.  While we were in line with them, Spain won the World Cup and the whole airport seemed to break out into song (I am assuming it was the national anthem of Spain) and lots of cheering and waiving of flags.  It was pretty cool.    Anyway, tired and defeated, we jumped into the ocean to cool off.  We decided this would be a good time to try out our snorkle gear too!  That didn't work so well.  First, it was really difficult to walk into the ocean wearing flippers.  Sorry, no pictures of this (lucky for me!).  Then, our goggles didn't seal all the way so we couldn't see.  Even if we could see, there wasn't anything to look at, so it was a failed experience. We plan on taking a boat out to go snorkle out in the ocean later this week.

For dinner, Valerie, Kevin, DJ and I went back to 5th street in search of some good local food.  We ended up at a place called Karen's Grill & Pizzaria.  Inspite of it's American name, it was definitely authentic in Mexican cuisine!  There was a live band playing traditional music (and a few american songs in broken english).  The food was amazing with fresh seafood (calamari = yum!), and homemade tortillas.  They even gave us all free piña coladas!  We would all give this restaurant two enthusiastic thumbs up!

And now everyone is arguing...I mean playing Risk.  Hopefully this game will be over soon-I need some sleep for another fun day in Mexico tomorrow!
